#Hill Walking
We run hill walking navigation courses throughout the year to help give you the confidence and skills to navigate competently and safely. We run introductory, intermediate, advanced and refresher courses to suit you.
These courses are run from Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland.
Being able to navigate safely on the mountains is of paramount importance. Reading a map, compass skills, timing & pacing are all skills required to navigate in poor conditions on the mountains.
- Our Introductory Navigation course is for those who are new to map reading. We spend time becoming familiar with the map and what it all means before heading out on a journey navigating as we go. By the end of the day you will have a good understanding on maps and the basic functions of a compass and be able to navigate well in moderately challenging conditions.
- Our Intermediate Navigation course suits people who have either attended an Introductory Course or have practiced some navigation in the past. With an understanding of contours and features, we'll look more at compass work, taking bearings and basic micro navigation where we look for relatively small features using a combination of tactics.
- Our Advanced Navigation course develops all navigation skills to a competent and high level including micro navigating in poor conditions and night navigation. An ideal course if you are a regular hill walker or if you are planning an expedition.
- Refresher Courses are suitable for those who have attended courses in the past and just need a day out to be reminded of all the different elements of navigating. It will also suit those who have navigated in the past but haven't recently and again just need that refresher. We can cover whatever you need on this course, but it can include all the skills mentioned in the previous courses as well as micro navigating in poor conditions and night navigating.
