Winter makes a return #winterskills #ski touring #cairngorms

14th January 2017

Winter really has been like a yoyo this season so far. Last week things didn't look great and now we've got full on winter conditions with about eight inches of snow in Aviemore!

We managed a ski tour yesterday at Drumochter. It was good to be back on skis, but it was a pretty wild day with only patches of snow to link up. Today was the start of an intro ski touring course, a women only winter skills and a normal winter skills course. The skiers found fresh snow and good viz on the hills behind Aviemore andd the skills teams ventured into the Northern cories and up to Cairn Gorm. Plenty of other folks enjoying the winter conditions.

A must do if visiting Aviemore My wife and i wanted to hike up' 'Ben Macdui' Scotlands second highest mountain. We contacted 'Cairngorm adventure guides' who were brilliant, easy to deal with, professional and promt. Our guide Emma didn't just get us to the summit but gave us lot's of local information on the area, and on hiking in the mountains in general. The walk is a couple of hours (we're 58 & 60 years old) with a few stops to take in the the stunning scenery and take photo's. As well as being constantly informative, Emma was also professional and considerate, offering us options for various descents, given the weather conditions and time. The weather changed, as would be expected, in the Scottish highlands, constantly, this only enhanced the overall experience and satisfaction of completing the hike. All in all, if you're looking for a memorable experience in the Scottish highlands, DO THIS!
